The Southern Pines Civic Club will meet Monday, February 3rd at 1:00pm at the clubhouse located at 105 S. Ashe St. Local writer Ray Owen will speak about the founding of our organization over a century ago. In his talk “Helen Boyd Dull and the Oldest Longleaf Pines,” Ray Owen will talk about the early years of the Southern Pines Civic Club, of which Dull, daughter of James and Louisa Boyd of Weymouth Woods, was a founding member in the early 1900s. Owen will speak also about Helen Boyd Dull’s efforts to save longleaf pine trees from the turpentine industry. Owen has told this story in poetry, providing words for David Serkin Ludwig’s oratorio, “Bleeding Pines,” about the oldest pines in Weymouth Woods. This oratorio has been performed across the country and will be performed by the Fayetteville Symphony in 2026. A brief social gathering with refreshments precedes the talk. Attendees are asked to bring their plastic film/bags for our recycling project. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend.
