Weymouth Center: “2025 Moore County Writers’ Competition” Submissions

February 7, 2025 @ 10:00 am

Submit your best fiction, nonfiction, or poetry works by February 28th, 2025!

Since 1986, the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities has hosted the Annual Moore County Writers’ Competition. Supported by the Donald and Elizabeth Cooke Foundation and most recently, the Mebane Foundation. The competition seeks to encourage writers throughout Moore County and to honor the efforts that go into creating superior literary works.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of James Boyd’s first novel, Drums, Weymouth Center is especially excited to announce a theme to this year’s competition. Drums is a coming of age story set in the Sandhills Area of North Carolina as the Revolutionary War breaks out. The protagonist in this novel is faced with many challenges as he leaves home for the first time and navigates a new and volatile country. They are asking that fiction and poetry submissions reflect a ‘Coming of Age’ theme either through the lens of a young person who is coming into their own or as an older person reflecting on their life experiences. This is a broad theme and should allow for unlimited creative possibilities.

Eligibility: The competition is open to all student and adult residents of Moore County, NC who fall into these age groups: Elementary (Grades 1-3 or 4-6), Middle School (Grades 7-9), High School (Grades 10-12), and Adult.
