SUMMARY:Exhibit: "Restless Nature"
DESCRIPTION:The School House Gallery at Starworks presents “Restless Nature\,” a solo exhibition of sculptural furniture by Elsa Hoffman. This exhibition marks a rare opportunity to view a large collection of Hoffman’s sculptural furniture together\, showcasing the past five years of her studio practice and new works created during her recent residency at Starworks. The collection will remain on public display through Saturday\, June 6th. \nGallery Hours: Monday-Saturday\, 9AM-5PM \n“My work begins from a kind of searching\, feeling for something real\, something meaty. My surroundings are my source material. The natural and architectural patterns and details of North Carolina shape my forms and designs. Inspired by the ancient craft of terrazzo\, I gather and repurpose aggregates – brick\, stone\, and other fragments – to embed within my concrete work. These scraps of materials\, mined from local building projects\, scavenged along the coastline\, and salvaged from a beloved property being sold\, are fragmented mementos. They tell tales and preserve a subtle storyline of place and relationship. By creating objects for rest from steel\, concrete\, and rubble\, I explore how furniture can embody both repose and restlessness\, ornament and decay. What emerges are not just places to sit\, but objects that hold memory and tension; grounded in their surroundings\, materially honest\, and unmistakably alive.”

SUMMARY:Take your Oil Painting to the Next Level with Beth Roy
DESCRIPTION:Ignite your creativity with our talented artist/instructor who can paint and teach it all! From breathtaking landscapes to vibrant cityscapes and majestic animals\, she has mastered the art of capturing the beauty of any subject. \nIntermediate to experienced oil painters who want to take their skills to the next level can join seasoned artist\, Beth Roy on Monday\, May 11th from 9:00 to 1:00 for an inspiring journey that will let your creativity flourish! \nBeth covers topics such as how to make your paintings more 3-dimensional\, color theory and the power of warm and cool colors\, elements of light and shadow\, loosening brushwork\, and finally\, painting how you see versus just copying a photograph. \nThis class is appropriate for oil painters with an intermediate to advanced level of experience for a cost of $79. \nGuests should plan to bring the following: \n\nAll painting supplies. See recommended supply list below.\nAt least three photographs as inspiration for your painting.\n\nYou’ll receive an email or phone call from Beth prior to class with a few more details\, and in the mean time you may email supply questions to info@ARTworksVass.com at least 48 hours prior to class. \nAbout Beth Roy \nGrowing up in rural Michigan\, artist Beth Roy acquired the foundation that allows her paintings to come to life today. She began riding horses at an early age and her life-long relationship with them has allowed her to translate them beautifully in her work. Body language is also a critical component of Beth’s compositions and using the subtlest of nuances\, she strives to capture the personality of animals and people in her work. \nProfessionally\, Beth studied art at Austin Peay State College\, and Christopher Newport College. She has won several regional awards and her work is currently represented in Beaufort\, Southern Pines\, and Vass\, North Carolina. \nBeth explains her creative process in this way\, “I initially seek good composition. I zero in on the lights and darks\, while keeping in mind colorful shadows or mid-values. All of my paintings start with a fairly dry ground color\, not a white canvas\, and then blocks of color are added. Very thin paint is applied first and only at the end are details and thicker paints added.” Beth considers her work to be highly representational and generally realistic. \nOil Painting Supply List  \n  \nIf you have a personal preference of oil painting supplies\, please know that you may use what you have\, paints\, brushes\, medium\, canvas\, etc.  There are certain items I have found over the years that work best and cause the least amount of aggravation. \nPaints: Colors I recommend are: Gamblin cadmium yellow light\, Napthol red & ultramarine blue\, titanium white & ivory black. Additional colors that are convenient to have: Daler-Rowney burnt sienna\, M. Graham cadmium orange\, thalo green & permanent rose. \nMedium: to thin and mix paint. Walnut\, linseed oil\, Liquin or Gamblin Solvent-free gel. \nSolvent: for cleaning brushes Gamsol (odorless) or Turpenoid (odorless)  in a traveling container. \nBrushes: Any boar\, sable or squirrel bristles are fine. You should have at least three “flat” brushes size 2 thru 10.    A “round” brush of any size 2-6.  A small to medium size metal palette knife (plastic palette knives are not recommended).  Synthetic brushes are suitable to start a painting with\, but do not have consistency and long life. \nSupports: (painting surface) Stretched or board canvas: 8X10 up to 12X16. The composition sometimes determines the size\, plus personal preferences. \nPalette: A seasoned wooden palette\, metal invoice box or gray plexi-glass.   I do not recommend the disposable wax paper palette sheets. They cannot hold up to palette knives and cleaning.   As long as the palette is sturdy\, neutral color & non-absorbic. It can be your personal preference. \n  \nEasel: Table top easels are available for use or you may bring your own. \nMisc:  smock or apron to protect clothing\, nitrile gloves\, brush cleaner\, soap\, clean rags and if necessary shop towels. Many artists are getting away from using paper towels due to excess garbage and leaving lint on canvas. \nImportant Information: \n\nRegistration allows for one Guest per class project.\nOnly Registered Guests may attend class.\nRegistrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled.\nClass starts promptly as scheduled.\nDress to mess or bring an apron.\nAt ARTworks Vass\, you’re always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.\nClick here to read the ARTworks Vass Disclosure and Liability Waiver for All Classes and Events\n\nRegister online here or call us at 910-245-4129 to save your space in class. \nClick here if you’d like to schedule this class as a private class for a minimum of 4 participants.
