Beth considers her work to be highly representational and generally realistic. \nBeth describes her creative process in this way\, “I initially seek good composition. I zero in on the lights and darks\, while keeping in mind colorful shadows or mid-values. All of my paintings start with a fairly dry ground color\, not a white canvas\, and then blocks of color are added. Very thin paint is applied first and only at the end are details and thicker paints added.” \nImportant Information: \n\nRegistration allows for one Guest per class project.\nOnly Registered Guests may attend class.\nRegistrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled.\nClass starts promptly as scheduled.\nDress to mess or bring an apron.\nAt ARTworks Vass\, you’re always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.\nClick here to read the ARTworks Vass Disclosure and Liability Waiver for All Classes and Events\n\nRegister online here or call us at 910-245-4129 to save your space in class. \nClick here if you’d like to schedule this class as a private class for a minimum of 6 participants.

SUMMARY:Beginning Wheel Throwing Pottery Class with Beth Roy
DESCRIPTION:Always Wanted to Try the Pottery Wheel? Now’s Your Chance! \nJoin Beth Roy on Saturday\, May 2nd from 10:00 to 1:00 for this fun\, hands-on introduction to wheel throwing! In this beginner-friendly workshop\, Beth will guide you through the fundamentals—centering clay on the wheel\, forming a cylinder\, trimming the “skirt\,” and cutting your piece from the wheel. By the end of class\, you’ll have created several small bowls\, dishes\, or similar masterpieces. \nImportant Info for First-Timers \nThis class is designed especially for beginners or those looking to refine their wheel-throwing technique. We encourage you to come with realistic expectations and a curious\, beginner’s mindset. \nNew to Clay? \nIf you’ve never touched clay before\, we highly recommend trying one of our hand-building classes first. These offer a great introduction to the feel of clay and how to manipulate it. They’re also perfect for creating beautiful\, larger-scale projects with a high rate of success—even for first-timers! \nAbout the Learning Process: \nIt’s important to know: no one sits down at the wheel for the first time and magically creates a big\, beautiful bowl. Wheel throwing is a skill that develops over time\, and every class builds on the one before it. Celebrate your progress—it’s a true sign of success! \nGet Ready to Get Messy! \n\nWear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. (Clay washes out easily!)\nAn apron is optional but helpful.\nTie back long hair and remove rings and bracelets.\nShort nails are best—but not required.\n\nWhat to Expect \n\nThis class last 3 hours: 2.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of cleanup. As potters in a community studio\, we strive to leave our work space better than we found it.\nTo ensure plenty of personal instruction\, this class is limited to 6 students—1 student per wheel.\nYou’ll create 2–4 small pieces\, such as bowls\, coasters\, or spoon rests. As you grow your skills\, your pieces will grow in size\, too!\nAfter class\, Beth will trim\, dry and bisque fire your pieces. Next she will glaze and kiln fire them again. This process can take up to 4 weeks\, depending on drying time and humidity.\nWe’ll notify you when your pottery is ready for pickup. Finished pieces must be picked up within 90 days of notification.\n\nAll-inclusive cost: $79\, which covers: \n\nAll tool usage and materials\nYour choice of 1 glaze color\nTwo kiln firings\nExpert instruction\n\nWant to Keep Throwing? \nWe hear it all the time: “I was just getting the hang of it!” “I don’t want to stop!” \nGood news—we’ve got options! \n\nTake another beginner session with Beth or any of our wheel instructors to keep building your skills.\nJoin Beth’s Novice Class\, a multi-session course covering throwing\, trimming\, glazing\, and firing. (We recommend completing at least two beginner classes first.)\nApply for a Pottery Membership at ARTworks Vass for ongoing studio access. Click here to learn more. (Pottery Memberships do not include instruction.)\n\nReady to get your hands muddy and create something beautiful? \nSpots are limited—reserve yours today! \nMore Important Information: \n\nBeginners are welcome.\nDress to mess or bring an apron.\nChildren age 14 and older may attend class independently.\nRegistrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled\nRegistration allows for 1 person per class. Only those who have registered may participate.\nClass starts promptly as scheduled.\nAt ARTworks Vass\, you’re always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.\nYou will be notified when your project is ready to pick up.  We will hold it for 90 days with monthly notifications by text or phone. If you haven’t requested an extension or picked up your work within 90 days\, your project will be disposed of at the gallery’s discretion.\nClick here to read the ARTworks Vass Disclosure and Liability Waiver for All Classes and Events\n\nRegister online here or call us at 910-245-4129 to save your space in class. \nClick here to request more information on scheduling a private class for a group of 6.

SUMMARY:Teaching on Native Land: Exploring the Living Histories of Indigenous North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Teachers in grades 4th-8th are invited to join the NC American Indian Heritage Commission\, part of the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources (DNCR)\, for a place-based workshop exploring two of North Carolina’s most significant indigenous sites: DNCR’s Town Creek Indian Mound and DNCR’s Morrow Mountain State Park. \nThrough immersive site visits\, conversations with Indigenous scholars and DNCR staff\, and hands-on teaching activities\, participating educators will deepen their understanding of more than 13\,000 years of human history in the region. The workshop emphasizes culturally responsive and community‑grounded approaches to teaching about Indigenous peoples\, both past and present\, and highlights the ecological\, historical\, and cultural importance of these sites. \nTeachers will also have the opportunity to review and provide feedback on Town Creek’s revised activities for the site and the classroom. Attendees will ultimately leave with practical strategies for presenting accurate and respectful Indigenous content\, fostering student inquiry\, and helping young people build meaningful connections to North Carolina’s landscape and the diverse tribes that continue to shape the state today. Applications Due April 24th.
