In this beginner-friendly workshop\, Beth will guide you through the fundamentals—centering clay on the wheel\, forming a cylinder\, trimming the “skirt\,” and cutting your piece from the wheel. By the end of class\, you’ll have created several small bowls\, dishes\, or similar masterpieces. \nImportant Info for First-Timers \nThis class is designed especially for beginners or those looking to refine their wheel-throwing technique. We encourage you to come with realistic expectations and a curious\, beginner’s mindset. \nNew to Clay? \nIf you’ve never touched clay before\, we highly recommend trying one of our hand-building classes first. These offer a great introduction to the feel of clay and how to manipulate it. They’re also perfect for creating beautiful\, larger-scale projects with a high rate of success—even for first-timers! \nAbout the Learning Process: \nIt’s important to know: no one sits down at the wheel for the first time and magically creates a big\, beautiful bowl. Wheel throwing is a skill that develops over time\, and every class builds on the one before it. Celebrate your progress—it’s a true sign of success! \nGet Ready to Get Messy! \n\nWear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. (Clay washes out easily!)\nAn apron is optional but helpful.\nTie back long hair and remove rings and bracelets.\nShort nails are best—but not required.\n\nWhat to Expect \n\nThis class last 3 hours: 2.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of cleanup. As potters in a community studio\, we strive to leave our work space better than we found it.\nTo ensure plenty of personal instruction\, this class is limited to 6 students—1 student per wheel.\nYou’ll create 2–4 small pieces\, such as bowls\, coasters\, or spoon rests. Candidates may not be professionally employed as a working artist. Please refer to the Prospectus for eligibility criteria. \nHow does our Gallery work? The Gallery collects applications from North Carolina artists who meet the entry criteria. Accepted artists are curated in for a two-month exhibition including an artist reception\, opportunity for an artist talk\, and promotional benefits through press releases and print/digital marketing. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House to see the special traveling exhibit\, “NC MAKERS\,” featuring photographs by Josh Braswell. \nJosh Braswell is a documentary/reportage photographer. This exhibit is his love letter to the craftspeople\, artists\, farmers\, and creators across North Carolina who show up every day and do the work of making. Cameras have allowed Josh to do things and meet people he never would have thought possible. He shoots a wide range of subject matter in a candid and observational style\, with an emphasis on documenting his home state of North Carolina. We open each show with a festive meet-the-artists reception. *The Arts Council Galleries will be closed on Monday\, May 25th. \nAdmission to Arts Council Galleries is free and open to the public on weekdays (10AM-5PM)\, select Saturdays of the month (12PM-2PM)\, and by appointment by calling 910-692-2787.
