SUMMARY:Teaching on Native Land: Exploring the Living Histories of Indigenous North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Teachers in grades 4th-8th are invited to join the NC American Indian Heritage Commission\, part of the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources (DNCR)\, for a place-based workshop exploring two of North Carolina’s most significant indigenous sites: DNCR’s Town Creek Indian Mound and DNCR’s Morrow Mountain State Park. \nThrough immersive site visits\, conversations with Indigenous scholars and DNCR staff\, and hands-on teaching activities\, participating educators will deepen their understanding of more than 13\,000 years of human history in the region. The workshop emphasizes culturally responsive and community‑grounded approaches to teaching about Indigenous peoples\, both past and present\, and highlights the ecological\, historical\, and cultural importance of these sites. \nTeachers will also have the opportunity to review and provide feedback on Town Creek’s revised activities for the site and the classroom. Attendees will ultimately leave with practical strategies for presenting accurate and respectful Indigenous content\, fostering student inquiry\, and helping young people build meaningful connections to North Carolina’s landscape and the diverse tribes that continue to shape the state today. Applications Due April 24th.

SUMMARY:Traveling Global War on Terror (GWOT) Memorial Flag Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum is hosting the traveling Global War on Terror (GWOT) Memorial Flag in its Reflection Garden from May 3rd-May 22rd. This moving tribute\, standing 6 feet tall and 28 feet wide\, honors approximately 7\,000 fallen heroes and Gold Star Families through a design that mimics a flag draped over a service member’s casket. \nThe memorial is composed of nearly 7\,000 dog tags—arranged alphabetically through 2019 and chronologically thereafter—and includes 50 gold stars recognizing Gold Star Families nationwide. Visitors can also see a mahogany battlefield cross sculpted by female veteran artist Alicia Dietz displayed in front of the flag. This powerful symbol of sacrifice and honor serves to raise awareness and provides a space for the community to witness a rise in remembrance for our nation’s heroes. \nTags are in alphabetical order ranging from September 11th\, 2001-December 31st\, 2019; thereafter the tags are in chronological order of the date Killed in Action (KIA).

SUMMARY:Town of Cameron: Community Meeting to Consider Forming Ruritan Club in Cameron
DESCRIPTION:Meeting to Consider Forming Ruritan Club in Cameron on Monday\, May 11th at 5PM at the Cameron Town Hall. An informational meeting is planned for Cameron area residents to discuss ideas\, and requirements for chartering a club with Ruritan National. Members from Johnsonville Ruritan Club will be there to answer questions and are willing to sponsor and help guide the club toward success. All citizens are invited to attend to gather more information and consider forming this worthwhile club. Please confirm your attendance by calling Karen Cox at 919-708-3933. \nSince 1928 Ruritan\, now America’s Leading Community Service Organization\, has served parts of our country through volunteerism\, making America’s communities better places in which to live and work for almost 100 years. A service organization made up of local clubs in urban areas\, small towns and rural communities\, Ruritan’s slogan is “Fellowship\, Goodwill and Community Service.” Club membership represents a cross-section of the community in which the club serves and is open to all people who are interested in working together to improve and enhance the living conditions in their area. \nA major component of Ruritan is patriotism and some programs may include providing patriotic programs at Memorial and Veterans Day; helping those in need; providing scholarships for local students; supporting first responders; and holding holiday events\, etc. Each club surveys its own community as to the needs of the residents and then works to meet some of those needs. The camaraderie and common purpose among its members make it fun and rewarding.

Cameras have allowed Josh to do things and meet people he never would have thought possible. He shoots a wide range of subject matter in a candid and observational style\, with an emphasis on documenting his home state of North Carolina. The Makers in his photos do amazing things\, and he hopes you are inspired to do something crafty\, creative or otherwise positively world-changing. \nExhibition Dates: April 27th – June 18th \nGallery Hours: 10AM-5PM (Weekdays) \nWeekend Dates (Hours): Saturday\, May 16th (12PM-2PM) \nAnd by appointment\, by calling the Arts Council at 910-692-2787.
