SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting of Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table
DESCRIPTION:The May Meeting of the Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday\, May 21\, 2026\, at the Civic Club on the corner of Pennsylvania and Ashe St. in Southern Pines. Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m. Our speaker will be Jim Burnett\, and the title of his presentation will be “Against All Odds: How the Second Battle of Sabine Pass Changed the Civil War in Texas.” \nOver the years\, our CWRT has had very few presentations about the important Trans-Mississippi Civil War. This key battle is thoroughly discussed in Jim’s book\, Saltgrass Prairie Saga: A German American Family in Texas\, which was published by Texas A&M University Press in 2025. It was selected by the Texas State Historical Association as the 2026 winner of the Kate Broocks Bates Award for Historical Research. \nThe book covers both the military and home front aspects of the Civil War in Texas\, as viewed through the experiences of a family who came to the state from a small German village in 1845. They settled on the Texas coastal prairie east of Houston\, became firmly established as rural Texans\, and then found themselves caught up in the War. Seven members of this family served in several CSA units\, something of an anomaly for Texans of German heritage. \nThe first and second battles of Sabine Pass and the battle of Galveston were all fought within fifty miles of this family’s farms. Jim’s talk draws extensively upon first-hand accounts in a large collection of letters\, two diaries\, military reports\, and other archival sources. \nJim Burnett holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A&M University. He began writing following a thirty-year career with the National Park Service and is the author of three non-fiction books and more than fifty feature articles. He is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and our Civil War Round Table. \nMeetings are open to the public. Up and coming artists and their work are presented to a regional audience in a professional setting. \nWhat is an Emerging Artist? An Emerging Artist is one who is early in their art career\, has limited experience exhibiting\, and seeks to further their creative work. Emerging Artists generally do not have an established resume of exhibitions\, but may have participated in group shows\, fairs and art competitions\, or art auctions. Candidates may not be professionally employed as a working artist. Please refer to the Prospectus for eligibility criteria. \nHow does our Gallery work? The Gallery collects applications from North Carolina artists who meet the entry criteria. Accepted artists are curated in for a two-month exhibition including an artist reception\, opportunity for an artist talk\, and promotional benefits through press releases and print/digital marketing. DESCRIPTION:The School House Gallery at Starworks presents “Restless Nature\,” a solo exhibition of sculptural furniture by Elsa Hoffman. This exhibition marks a rare opportunity to view a large collection of Hoffman’s sculptural furniture together\, showcasing the past five years of her studio practice and new works created during her recent residency at Starworks. The collection will remain on public display through Saturday\, June 6th. \nGallery Hours: Monday-Saturday\, 9AM-5PM \n“My work begins from a kind of searching\, feeling for something real\, something meaty. My surroundings are my source material. The natural and architectural patterns and details of North Carolina shape my forms and designs. Inspired by the ancient craft of terrazzo\, I gather and repurpose aggregates – brick\, stone\, and other fragments – to embed within my concrete work. These scraps of materials\, mined from local building projects\, scavenged along the coastline\, and salvaged from a beloved property being sold\, are fragmented mementos. They tell tales and preserve a subtle storyline of place and relationship. By creating objects for rest from steel\, concrete\, and rubble\, I explore how furniture can embody both repose and restlessness\, ornament and decay. What emerges are not just places to sit\, but objects that hold memory and tension; grounded in their surroundings\, materially honest\, and unmistakably alive.”

SUMMARY:Traveling Global War on Terror (GWOT) Memorial Flag Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum is hosting the traveling Global War on Terror (GWOT) Memorial Flag in its Reflection Garden from May 3rd-May 22rd. This moving tribute\, standing 6 feet tall and 28 feet wide\, honors approximately 7\,000 fallen heroes and Gold Star Families through a design that mimics a flag draped over a service member’s casket. \nThe memorial is composed of nearly 7\,000 dog tags—arranged alphabetically through 2019 and chronologically thereafter—and includes 50 gold stars recognizing Gold Star Families nationwide. Visitors can also see a mahogany battlefield cross sculpted by female veteran artist Alicia Dietz displayed in front of the flag. This powerful symbol of sacrifice and honor serves to raise awareness and provides a space for the community to witness a rise in remembrance for our nation’s heroes. \nTags are in alphabetical order ranging from September 11th\, 2001-December 31st\, 2019; thereafter the tags are in chronological order of the date Killed in Action (KIA).

This exhibition marks a rare opportunity to view a large collection of Hoffman’s sculptural furniture together\, showcasing the past five years of her studio practice and new works created during her recent residency at Starworks. The collection will remain on public display through Saturday\, June 6th. \nGallery Hours: Monday-Saturday\, 9AM-5PM \n“My work begins from a kind of searching\, feeling for something real\, something meaty. My surroundings are my source material. The natural and architectural patterns and details of North Carolina shape my forms and designs. Inspired by the ancient craft of terrazzo\, I gather and repurpose aggregates – brick\, stone\, and other fragments – to embed within my concrete work. These scraps of materials\, mined from local building projects\, scavenged along the coastline\, and salvaged from a beloved property being sold\, are fragmented mementos. They tell tales and preserve a subtle storyline of place and relationship. By creating objects for rest from steel\, concrete\, and rubble\, I explore how furniture can embody both repose and restlessness\, ornament and decay. What emerges are not just places to sit\, but objects that hold memory and tension; grounded in their surroundings\, materially honest\, and unmistakably alive.”

Join Beth Roy on Monday\, May 25th from 6:00 to 9:00 for this hands-on pottery class where you’ll create your own double dip bowl set—perfect for chips & salsa\, veggies & hummus\, cookies & icing… you get the idea 😉 \nUsing hand-building techniques\, you’ll design a connected set of bowls with a center divider and optional built-in resting spots for spoons (just like the sample shown!). Functional\, stylish\, and totally customizable—this piece is a crowd-pleaser for entertaining or everyday snacking. \nClass Highlights: \n\n🏺 Hand-build a double bowl with center divider\n🥄 Add fun features like spoon rests or sculpted details\n🎨 Choose your glaze color(s) for a one-of-a-kind finish\n👩‍🎨 Step-by-step instruction—great for beginners and seasoned creators\n\nNo experience needed—just bring your creativity (and maybe your favorite dip inspiration)! \nAfter class\, Beth will carefully dry\, kiln fire\, glaze\, and kiln fire your work again. Finished items will be ready for pickup about 4 weeks after class\, depending on drying time and humidity.
