SUMMARY:James Creek Cider House: Orchard Wassail 2026
DESCRIPTION:“Apple tree\, apple tree\, we all come to wassail thee!” Wassail is a traditional twelfth night celebration. \nJames Creek Cider House in Cameron invites the community to participate in their annual Orchard Wassail event on Saturday\, January 17th at 4:30pm! Gather with cider in hand and walk the orchard together as we toast to the trees for a healthy\, plentiful harvest in the year ahead. This is one of James Creek’s favorite traditions—and they are excited to share it with you! \nWassailing is an Old English tradition where people visit orchards in midwinter to “wake the trees\,” chase away bad spirits\, and encourage a plentiful harvest. The word wassail means “be in good health.” \nThe group will gather with cider in hand to walk through the orchard and toast the trees for a healthy year ahead. Activities include parading through the orchard\, “singing” to the apple and pear trees\, and offering them sustenance. A tour of the orchard and ciderhouse production space will be offered\, and there will be a bonfire. Costumes are encouraged for this celebration of community\, tradition\, and hope for abundance. \nTo purchase tickets\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table
DESCRIPTION:The January Meeting of the Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday\, January 15th\, 2026\, at the Civic Club on the corner of Pennsylvania and Ashe St. in Southern Pines. Socializing and viewing of exhibits begin at 6:15pm. This is the annual Members’ Meeting where members can present their own topics of interest or present an artifact or Civil War letter. \nPaul Peeples presentation is “The U.S. Marine Corps 1853-61: Service Abroad and at Home.” Paul feels it is time for a prequel to the Civil War. He will present images of the engagement of the Canton Barrier Forts (China) by U.S. ships in 1856 and the U.S. Marines firing on rioters in Washington\, DC in response to rioters firing upon them in 1857. The images show the Marines in uniforms from the 1852-59 era. \nJim Reynolds will be providing a short presentation on corps badges in the Union Army. The concept was first used by Gen. Philip Kearny for his division. In 1863\, Gen. Joseph Hooker introduced the idea that each corps in the Army of the Potomac have a distinctive corps badge and that each division in that corps have a distinctive color — 1st Division was red\, 2nd Division was white\, and 3rd Division was blue. The effect on the morale of the army was positive. \nExhibits may be viewed prior to the meeting. Viewing will start at 6:15pm. Meetings are open to the public. For more details contact Matt Farina at 910.246.0452 or mafarina@aol.com.  The Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table is a 501(c)(3)\, incorporated\, non-profit\, educational organization. The purpose of the organization is to promote\, educate\, and further stimulate interest in\, and discussion of\, all aspects of the Civil War period.
