SUMMARY:Monthly meeting of Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table
DESCRIPTION:The October Meeting of the Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table will be held on Thursday\, October 15\, 2026\, at 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Club on the corner of Pennsylvania and Ashe St. in Southern Pines. Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m. Our guest speaker is historian Robert Girardi\, Jr. and the title of his presentation is\, “Maj-Gen. Gouverneur Kemble Warren’s Last Battle: The General vs. the Historians.” \n  \nAt the start of the Civil War\, Warren was a mathematics instructor at West Point Academy. At Gettysburg\, he recognized the significance of Little Round Top and initiated the defense of the position. He was promoted to Major-General after Gettysburg and commanded the II Corps. Warren then assumed command of V Corps during the Overland Campaign and the Petersburg siege. Maj-Gen. Philip Sheridan was dissatisfied with Warren’s performance. Grant gave Sheridan written permission to relieve Warren if Sheridan felt it was justified. At the Battle of Five Forks on April 1\, 1865\, Sheridan relieved Warren of his command on the spot. \n  \nGirardi will present an overview of Warren’s career\, his accomplishments\, and how his critics\, Grant\, Sheridan\, and others\, removed him from command and then smeared him in the history books. Afterward\, these writings have led generations of historians to misrepresent him in their studies of the war.  Thus\, Warren is one of the most misunderstood and unappreciated generals of the war. Robert will examine Warren’s career and discuss the misconceptions and fallacies that appear in too many of our books. \n  \nRobert earned his M.A. in History at Loyola University in Chicago in 1991. He is the current president of the Salt Creek CWRT and a past president of the Chicago CWRT. He is a member of the Company of Military Historians and the Sons of Union Veterans. Robert is a popular speaker at CWRTs\, historical societies\, museums\, schools and libraries throughout the United States. \n  \nMeetings are open to the public.
