SUMMARY:Monthly meeting of Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table
DESCRIPTION:The September Meeting of the Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table will be held at 7:00PM on Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\, at the Civic Club on the corner of Pennsylvania and Ashe St. in Southern Pines. Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m. Our very special speaker is historian and author\, Jim Morgan.  His presentation is titled\, “Civil War Officers in the Service of Egypt.” \n\n\n\nTHE 1874 to 1876 Egyptian-Ethiopian War is one of the 19th century’s more obscure conflicts. Among the most surprising aspects of the conflict is that it involved a group of ex-Confederate officers who had been hired by an Ottoman viceroy to conquer an empire in central Africa. Less than 10 years after the fall of the Confederacy\, a group of Confederate officers\, along with some Union officers\, found themselves posted more than 6\,000 miles from home\, in new uniforms and leading columns of African troops into the Ethiopian highlands. \n\n\n\nJim Morgan has been a lifelong Civil War enthusiast. He is a past president of the Loudoun County Civil War Roundtable\, was a co-founder of the Friends of Ball’s Bluff\, and served on the board of the Mosby Heritage Area Association from 2009-17 Jim holds Master’s degrees in Political Science from the University of West Florida and Library Science from Florida State University. In 2014\, he retired from the State Department where he held a number of positions. \n\n\n\nMeetings are open to the public. For more details about this meeting\, contact Matt Farina at 910.246.0452 or mafarina@aol.com.  The Rufus Barringer Civil War Round Table is a 501(c)(3)\, incorporated\, non-profit\, educational organization. The purpose of the organization is to promote\, educate\, and further stimulate interest in\, and discussion of\, all aspects of the Civil War period.

SUMMARY:Moore County Historical Association Lecture Series: "How to Research Your World War II Military Relative"
DESCRIPTION:The Moore County Historical Association sponsors its next lecture in the 2026 series on Sunday September 20th\, at 2:00PM at the Southern Pines Civic Club. Socializing begins at 1:30PM. Jackson Wittkamper will talk about How to Research Your World War II Military Relative. He will also briefly cover your military relative back to the Civil War. This lecture is free and is open to the public. This is Jack’s story in his own words. \n\n\n\n“This journey started for me with my own grandfather. He did not share much about his time in the Pacific\, and after he died I inherited a few of his war keepsakes and photos that I knew nothing about. None of my aunts or uncles (his children) knew anything either\, so I decided to try and find out. \n\n\n\nAfter about two years of learning to dig through the archives\, I was able to recreate his entire service history and retrace his path during the war. I even found some reports in the archives that had his signature on them!  I have become quite passionate about this type of research\, because I have seen how rewarding it is for people to recover family stories that are all but forgotten. These stories are hiding in plain sight. Most information is available to the public for anyone to access\, but it takes some practice to know where to look. I have been doing this for a number of years now. With the WWII generation quickly slipping away\, I have sensed a growing hunger in their children and grandchildren to preserve their histories.”
