DESCRIPTION:Always Wanted to Try the Pottery Wheel? Now’s Your Chance! \nJoin Beth Roy on Saturday\, June 13th from 10:00 to 1:00 for this fun\, hands-on introduction to wheel throwing! In this beginner-friendly workshop\, Beth will guide you through the fundamentals—centering clay on the wheel\, forming a cylinder\, trimming the “skirt\,” and cutting your piece from the wheel. By the end of class\, you’ll have created several small bowls\, dishes\, or similar masterpieces. \nImportant Info for First-Timers \nThis class is designed especially for beginners or those looking to refine their wheel-throwing technique. We encourage you to come with realistic expectations and a curious\, beginner’s mindset. \nNew to Clay? \nIf you’ve never touched clay before\, we highly recommend trying one of our hand-building classes first. These offer a great introduction to the feel of clay and how to manipulate it. They’re also perfect for creating beautiful\, larger-scale projects with a high rate of success—even for first-timers! \nAbout the Learning Process: \nIt’s important to know: no one sits down at the wheel for the first time and magically creates a big\, beautiful bowl. Wheel throwing is a skill that develops over time\, and every class builds on the one before it. Celebrate your progress—it’s a true sign of success! \nGet Ready to Get Messy! \n\nWear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. (Clay washes out easily!)\nAn apron is optional but helpful.\nTie back long hair and remove rings and bracelets.\nShort nails are best—but not required.\n\nWhat to Expect \n\nThis class last 3 hours: 2.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of cleanup. As potters in a community studio\, we strive to leave our work space better than we found it.\nTo ensure plenty of personal instruction\, this class is limited to 6 students—1 student per wheel.\nYou’ll create 2–4 small pieces\, such as bowls\, coasters\, or spoon rests. As you grow your skills\, your pieces will grow in size\, too!\nAfter class\, Beth will trim\, dry and bisque fire your pieces. Next she will glaze and kiln fire them again. This process can take up to 4 weeks\, depending on drying time and humidity.\nWe’ll notify you when your pottery is ready for pickup. Finished pieces must be picked up within 90 days of notification.\n\nAll-inclusive cost: $79\, which covers: \n\nAll tool usage and materials\nYour choice of 1 glaze color\nTwo kiln firings\nExpert instruction\n\nWant to Keep Throwing? \nWe hear it all the time: “I was just getting the hang of it!” “I don’t want to stop!” \nGood news—we’ve got options! \n\nTake another beginner session with Beth or any of our wheel instructors to keep building your skills.\nJoin Beth’s Novice Class\, a multi-session course covering throwing\, trimming\, glazing\, and firing. (We recommend completing at least two beginner classes first.)\nApply for a Pottery Membership at ARTworks Vass for ongoing studio access. Click here to learn more. (Pottery Memberships do not include instruction.)\n\nReady to get your hands muddy and create something beautiful? \nSpots are limited—reserve yours today! \nMore Important Information: \n\nBeginners are welcome.\nDress to mess or bring an apron.\nPlease note: ARTworks Vass is home to friendly gallery/studio cats who may be present during classes and events. 🐾\nChildren age 14 and older may attend class independently.\nRegistrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled\nRegistration allows for 1 person per class. Only those who have registered may participate.\nClass starts promptly as scheduled.\nAt ARTworks Vass\, you’re always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.\nYou will be notified when your project is ready to pick up.  We will hold it for 90 days with monthly notifications by text or phone. If you haven’t requested an extension or picked up your work within 90 days\, your project will be disposed of at the gallery’s discretion.\nClick here to read the ARTworks Vass Disclosure and Liability Waiver for All Classes and Events\n\nRegister online here or call us at 910-245-4129 to save your space in class.

SUMMARY:Shimmer & Share: A "Rainbow Fish" Adventure! with Kathy Downs at ARTworks Vass
DESCRIPTION:Dive into a colorful underwater adventure inspired by the beloved book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister! During this special kids class on Saturday\, June 13th from 9:30 to 11:00\, we’ll read and discuss the heartwarming story of a shiny little fish who learns that kindness and sharing are far more important than being the most beautiful fish in the sea.\nAfter story time\, each child will create and paint their very own fish using a fun selection of colors and creative designs. Will your fish sparkle like the Rainbow Fish or become a one-of-a-kind ocean creation? The choice is yours!\nThis class encourages creativity\, imagination\, and meaningful conversation about friendship\, kindness\, and sharing.\nNo experience needed—just bring your imagination and get ready for some fishy fun! \nNote: After class\, Kathy will kiln-fire each piece. SUMMARY:Take your Oil Painting to the Next Level with Beth Roy
DESCRIPTION:Ignite your creativity with our talented artist/instructor who can paint and teach it all! From breathtaking landscapes to vibrant cityscapes and majestic animals\, she has mastered the art of capturing the beauty of any subject. \nIntermediate to experienced oil painters who want to take their skills to the next level can join seasoned artist\, Beth Roy on Monday\, May 11th from 9:00 to 1:00 for an inspiring journey that will let your creativity flourish! \nBeth covers topics such as how to make your paintings more 3-dimensional\, color theory and the power of warm and cool colors\, elements of light and shadow\, loosening brushwork\, and finally\, painting how you see versus just copying a photograph. \nThis class is appropriate for oil painters with an intermediate to advanced level of experience for a cost of $79. \nGuests should plan to bring the following: \n\nAll painting supplies. See recommended supply list below.\nAt least three photographs as inspiration for your painting.\n\nYou’ll receive an email or phone call from Beth prior to class with a few more details\, and in the mean time you may email supply questions to info@ARTworksVass.com at least 48 hours prior to class. \nAbout Beth Roy \nGrowing up in rural Michigan\, artist Beth Roy acquired the foundation that allows her paintings to come to life today. She began riding horses at an early age and her life-long relationship with them has allowed her to translate them beautifully in her work. Body language is also a critical component of Beth’s compositions and using the subtlest of nuances\, she strives to capture the personality of animals and people in her work. \nProfessionally\, Beth studied art at Austin Peay State College\, and Christopher Newport College. She has won several regional awards and her work is currently represented in Beaufort\, Southern Pines\, and Vass\, North Carolina. \nBeth explains her creative process in this way\, “I initially seek good composition. I zero in on the lights and darks\, while keeping in mind colorful shadows or mid-values. All of my paintings start with a fairly dry ground color\, not a white canvas\, and then blocks of color are added. Very thin paint is applied first and only at the end are details and thicker paints added.” Beth considers her work to be highly representational and generally realistic. \nOil Painting Supply List  \n  \nIf you have a personal preference of oil painting supplies\, please know that you may use what you have\, paints\, brushes\, medium\, canvas\, etc.  There are certain items I have found over the years that work best and cause the least amount of aggravation. \nPaints: Colors I recommend are: Gamblin cadmium yellow light\, Napthol red & ultramarine blue\, titanium white & ivory black. Additional colors that are convenient to have: Daler-Rowney burnt sienna\, M. Graham cadmium orange\, thalo green & permanent rose. \nMedium: to thin and mix paint. Walnut\, linseed oil\, Liquin or Gamblin Solvent-free gel. \nSolvent: for cleaning brushes Gamsol (odorless) or Turpenoid (odorless)  in a traveling container. \nBrushes: Any boar\, sable or squirrel bristles are fine. You should have at least three “flat” brushes size 2 thru 10.    A “round” brush of any size 2-6.  A small to medium size metal palette knife (plastic palette knives are not recommended).  Synthetic brushes are suitable to start a painting with\, but do not have consistency and long life. \nSupports: (painting surface) Stretched or board canvas: 8X10 up to 12X16. The composition sometimes determines the size\, plus personal preferences. \nPalette: A seasoned wooden palette\, metal invoice box or gray plexi-glass.   I do not recommend the disposable wax paper palette sheets. They cannot hold up to palette knives and cleaning.   As long as the palette is sturdy\, neutral color & non-absorbic. It can be your personal preference. \n  \nEasel: Table top easels are available for use or you may bring your own. \nMisc:  smock or apron to protect clothing\, nitrile gloves\, brush cleaner\, soap\, clean rags and if necessary shop towels. Many artists are getting away from using paper towels due to excess garbage and leaving lint on canvas. \nImportant Information: \n\nRegistration allows for one Guest per class project.\nOnly Registered Guests may attend class.\nRegistrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled.\nClass starts promptly as scheduled.\nDress to mess or bring an apron.\nAt ARTworks Vass\, you’re always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.\nClick here to read the ARTworks Vass Disclosure and Liability Waiver for All Classes and Events\n\nRegister online here or call us at 910-245-4129 to save your space in class. \nClick here if you’d like to schedule this class as a private class for a minimum of 4 participants.

SUMMARY:Beginning Wheel Throwing Pottery Class with Marie the Potter
DESCRIPTION:Join Marie the Potter on Tuesday\, May 19th from 5:30 to 8:00 as she teaches you how to center clay on a wheel\, how to form a cylinder\, cut the skirt off and cut the piece from the wheel. Ultimately you’ll make several small bowls or dishes. \nImportant Information About This Class \nThis class was designed with beginners in mind\, and those wishing to improve their wheel throwing skills. We hope that the information that follows will help you to approach it with realistic expectations and a hopeful beginners mindset. \nIf you’ve never ever touched clay previously\, we highly recommend that you join us for one of our hand building classes before trying wheel throwing. They’ll provide you with a feel for clay and the manners in which we manipulate it. These classes also ensure successful beautiful larger scale projects to most everyone who attends them. \nNo one easily creates big beautiful bowls when they sit down at the wheel for the first time. It’s a process\, and it takes time to master it. The skills that you learn in each class will build on one another\, and we encourage you to embrace this progress as a measure of your success. \nPrepare for Class! \nDress comfortably and casually as pottery throwing tends to be a messy endeavor. Bring an apron if you’d like to wear one but the clay washes out of clothes beautifully! \nRemove bracelets and rings\, tie up long hair and trim your fingernails before class. While short nails aren’t required\, we find that it’s a bit easier to throw pottery with them. \nEach wheel throwing class will last for 3 hours. This includes 2 1/2 hours of instruction and a 1/2 hour for cleanup. As potters in a community studio\, we strive to leave our work spaces better than we found them. \nYou can expect to yield 2 – 4 miniature masterpieces from this class. These pieces tend to include tiny bowls\, coasters\, spoon rests\, and other similarly sized forms. As your skills grow\, the size of your thrown pieces will grow too. \nAfter class\, Marie will finish each piece that you create. They’ll be trimmed\, dried\, fired in our kiln\, glazed\, dried\, and fired in our kiln again. This entire process can take approximately 4 weeks depending on the humidity level and the time that it takes your pottery to thoroughly dry between kiln firings. We’ll update you by phone or text when your pottery is ready for pickup. Finished classwork must be picked up within 90 days of notification that it’s ready. At the end of 90 days\, student projects will be disposed of at the gallery’s discretion. \nTo allow the most individualized attention possible\, class size is limited to 6 students\, 1 per wheel. \nThe all inclusive price of $79 for this class includes all supplies\, tool usage\, glaze selection\, 2 kiln firings\, and expert instruction. \nBut I Want More! \nTwo of the most common things that we hear at the end of a wheel throwing class are\, “I was just getting the hang of it!” and “I don’t want to stop throwing!”\, and we love this enthusiasm! \nWe have several solutions for this: \n\nEnroll in another session with Marie to build on your newly established skills.\nEnroll in a Novice Class where you are taken through the process from throwing to glaze and firing. To maximize your chances for success\, we recommend that you previously attended at least two beginner classes\nApply for a Pottery Membership at ARTworks Vass. Click here to learn more.\n\nMore Important Information: \n\nBeginners are welcome.\nDress to mess or bring an apron.\nChildren age 14 and older may attend class independently.\nRegistrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled\nRegistration allows for 1 person per class. \nClick here to request more information on scheduling a private class for a group of 6.
