DESCRIPTION:The Pines Times was honored to collaborate with the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens on a special Memorial Day Walk in the Gardens. Through this meaningful project\, we had the privilege of meeting with local families to help share the stories of loved ones who proudly served our country. Memorial Day Walk in the Gardens honors the service\, sacrifice\, and experiences of local veterans through a series of featured stories presented in the Memorial Day gazebo at the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens!\nVisit the gardens\, take a peaceful walk\, and discover the veterans tribute signs placed in the central part of the gardens near the gazebo and creek. Each sign includes a QR code that allows visitors to hear personal stories shared by family members — remembering not only the service of these veterans\, but also the lives they lived and the legacy they left behind. Explore photographs\, biographies\, and personal reflections that highlight the lives and military service of these individuals while connecting remembrance with the peaceful setting of the gardens. Inside the gazebo\, photographs of each veteran are paired with QR codes linking visitors to extended stories and video interviews. These videos provide a deeper look into each veteran’s experiences\, service\, and connection to the community.\nWe extend our deepest gratitude to all service members and their families — especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It is our hope that this tribute not only honors these heroes but also inspires more families to share their stories so this project can continue to grow in the future. The display will be on view through Sunday\, June 14th. \n \n

Will your fish sparkle like the Rainbow Fish or become a one-of-a-kind ocean creation? The choice is yours!\nThis class encourages creativity\, imagination\, and meaningful conversation about friendship\, kindness\, and sharing.\nNo experience needed—just bring your imagination and get ready for some fishy fun! \nNote: After class\, Kathy will kiln-fire each piece. Finished projects will be ready for pickup in approximately two weeks. Kathy will text you when your child’s pieces are ready to pick up. Kathy Downs discovered her passion for glass art in 2011 when she and her family moved to the Quantico\, VA area. Initially her small glass pieces were unique gifts for family and friends but as her collection and skills grew\, she started selling her glass to fund her “glass” habit! She now creates both large and small fused glass in her home-based studio and with 38 years of eduction experience\, she is excited to teach and mentor aspiring glass artists through her fused glass classes at ARTworks Vass! \nImportant Information: \n\nBeginners are welcome.\nSchool Aged Children\, who follow instructions well and can work and function relatively independently in the classroom and bathroom are welcome to attend.\nAdults are not permitted to register as a student in this class unless registering and attending with the child or children.  (Grab your favorite kiddo and join us!)\nFor the safety of all involved\, we require that Children be dropped-off and picked-up with their instructor in the classroom. In this beginner-friendly workshop\, Beth will guide you through the fundamentals—centering clay on the wheel\, forming a cylinder\, trimming the “skirt\,” and cutting your piece from the wheel. By the end of class\, you’ll have created several small bowls\, dishes\, or similar masterpieces. \nImportant Info for First-Timers \nThis class is designed especially for beginners or those looking to refine their wheel-throwing technique. We encourage you to come with realistic expectations and a curious\, beginner’s mindset. \nNew to Clay? \nIf you’ve never touched clay before\, we highly recommend trying one of our hand-building classes first. These offer a great introduction to the feel of clay and how to manipulate it. They’re also perfect for creating beautiful\, larger-scale projects with a high rate of success—even for first-timers! \nAbout the Learning Process: \nIt’s important to know: no one sits down at the wheel for the first time and magically creates a big\, beautiful bowl. Wheel throwing is a skill that develops over time\, and every class builds on the one before it. Celebrate your progress—it’s a true sign of success! \nGet Ready to Get Messy! \n\nWear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. (Clay washes out easily!)\nAn apron is optional but helpful.\nTie back long hair and remove rings and bracelets.\nShort nails are best—but not required.\n\nWhat to Expect \n\nThis class last 3 hours: 2.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of cleanup.
