SUMMARY:Sandhills Community College Theatre Presents: "The Fantasticks"
DESCRIPTION:Sandhills Community College Theatre presents The Fantasticks! Directed by Pinehurst resident Cinny Beggs and produced by Bill Saunders\, the coordinator of the Sandhills Community College Theatre Program\, this intimate production of  The Fantasticks will be performed in the McPherson Black Box Theatre at the Bradshaw Performing Arts Center. \nPerformances: Friday May 1st & Saturday\, May 2nd at 7PM  |  Saturday\, May 2nd & Sunday\, May 3rd at 2PM \nWidely known as the world’s longest-running musical\, The Fantasticks enjoyed a record-breaking 42-year Off-Broadway run at the Sullivan Street Playhouse. Audiences continue to be drawn to its timeless themes\, memorable narrator figure El Gallo\, and the beloved songs “Try to Remember” and “Soon it’s Gonna Rain.” \n“Try To Remember” a time when this romantic charmer wasn’t enchanting audiences around the world. The Fantasticks is the longest-running musical in the world and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. Its moving tale of young lovers who become disillusioned\, only to discover a more mature\, meaningful love is punctuated by a bountiful series of catchy\, memorable songs\, many of which have become classics. \nThe Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy\, a girl\, and their two fathers who try to keep them apart. The narrator\, El Gallo\, asks the audience to use their imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and the girl fall in love\, grow apart and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words that\, “without a hurt\, the heart is hollow.” \nPresented in a minimalist style that highlights imagination and storytelling\, the production emphasizes the musical’s poetic exploration of young love\, parental interference\, and the journey from romantic idealism to real-world understanding. All performances are general admission. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $5 with a valid student ID. Tickets may be purchased in advance through the event link provided below.

SUMMARY:Traveling Global War on Terror (GWOT) Memorial Flag Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum is hosting the traveling Global War on Terror (GWOT) Memorial Flag in its Reflection Garden from May 3rd-May 22rd. This moving tribute\, standing 6 feet tall and 28 feet wide\, honors approximately 7\,000 fallen heroes and Gold Star Families through a design that mimics a flag draped over a service member’s casket. \nThe memorial is composed of nearly 7\,000 dog tags—arranged alphabetically through 2019 and chronologically thereafter—and includes 50 gold stars recognizing Gold Star Families nationwide. Visitors can also see a mahogany battlefield cross sculpted by female veteran artist Alicia Dietz displayed in front of the flag. This powerful symbol of sacrifice and honor serves to raise awareness and provides a space for the community to witness a rise in remembrance for our nation’s heroes. \nTags are in alphabetical order ranging from September 11th\, 2001-December 31st\, 2019; thereafter the tags are in chronological order of the date Killed in Action (KIA).
