SUMMARY:Beginning Wheel Throwing Pottery Class with Beth Roy
DESCRIPTION:Always Wanted to Try the Pottery Wheel? Now’s Your Chance! \nJoin Beth Roy on Saturday\, Oct 24th from 10:00 to 1:00 for this fun\, hands-on introduction to wheel throwing! In this beginner-friendly workshop\, Beth will guide you through the fundamentals—centering clay on the wheel\, forming a cylinder\, trimming the “skirt\,” and cutting your piece from the wheel. By the end of class\, you’ll have created several small bowls\, dishes\, or similar masterpieces. \nImportant Info for First-Timers \nThis class is designed especially for beginners or those looking to refine their wheel-throwing technique. We encourage you to come with realistic expectations and a curious\, beginner’s mindset. \nNew to Clay? \nIf you’ve never touched clay before\, we highly recommend trying one of our hand-building classes first. These offer a great introduction to the feel of clay and how to manipulate it. They’re also perfect for creating beautiful\, larger-scale projects with a high rate of success—even for first-timers! \nAbout the Learning Process: \nIt’s important to know: no one sits down at the wheel for the first time and magically creates a big\, beautiful bowl. Wheel throwing is a skill that develops over time\, and every class builds on the one before it. Celebrate your progress—it’s a true sign of success! \nGet Ready to Get Messy! \n\nWear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. (Clay washes out easily!)\nAn apron is optional but helpful.\nTie back long hair and remove rings and bracelets.\nShort nails are best—but not required.\n\nWhat to Expect \n\nThis class last 3 hours: 2.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of cleanup. As potters in a community studio\, we strive to leave our work space better than we found it.\nTo ensure plenty of personal instruction\, this class is limited to 6 students—1 student per wheel.\nYou’ll create 2–4 small pieces\, such as bowls\, coasters\, or spoon rests. As you grow your skills\, your pieces will grow in size\, too!\nAfter class\, Beth will trim\, dry and bisque fire your pieces. Next she will glaze and kiln fire them again. This process can take up to 4 weeks\, depending on drying time and humidity.\nWe’ll notify you when your pottery is ready for pickup. Finished pieces must be picked up within 90 days of notification.\n\nAll-inclusive cost: $79\, which covers: \n\nAll tool usage and materials\nYour choice of 1 glaze color\nTwo kiln firings\nExpert instruction\n\nWant to Keep Throwing? \nWe hear it all the time: “I was just getting the hang of it!” “I don’t want to stop!” \nGood news—we’ve got options! \n\nTake another beginner session with Beth or any of our wheel instructors to keep building your skills.\nJoin Beth’s Novice Class\, a multi-session course covering throwing\, trimming\, glazing\, and firing. (We recommend completing at least two beginner classes first.)\nApply for a Pottery Membership at ARTworks Vass for ongoing studio access. Click here to learn more. (Pottery Memberships do not include instruction.)\n\nReady to get your hands muddy and create something beautiful? \nSpots are limited—reserve yours today! \nMore Important Information: \n\nBeginners are welcome.\nDress to mess or bring an apron.\nPlease note: ARTworks Vass is home to friendly gallery/studio cats who may be present during classes and events. 🐾\nChildren age 14 and older may attend class independently.\nRegistrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled\nRegistration allows for 1 person per class. Only those who have registered may participate.\nClass starts promptly as scheduled.\nAt ARTworks Vass\, you’re always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.\nYou will be notified when your project is ready to pick up.  We will hold it for 90 days with monthly notifications by text or phone. If you haven’t requested an extension or picked up your work within 90 days\, your project will be disposed of at the gallery’s discretion.\nClick here to read the ARTworks Vass Disclosure and Liability Waiver for All Classes and Events\n\nRegister online here or call us at 910-245-4129 to save your space in class. \nClick here to request more information on scheduling a private class for a group of 6.

SUMMARY:Beginning Wheel Throwing Pottery Class with Beth Roy
DESCRIPTION:Always Wanted to Try the Pottery Wheel? Now’s Your Chance!\n\nJoin Beth Roy on Saturday\, Nov. 7th from 10:00 to 1:00 for this fun\, hands-on introduction to wheel throwing! In this beginner-friendly workshop\, Beth will guide you through the fundamentals—centering clay on the wheel\, forming a cylinder\, trimming the “skirt\,” and cutting your piece from the wheel. By the end of class\, you’ll have created several small bowls\, dishes\, or similar masterpieces.\n\nImportant Info for First-Timers\n\nThis class is designed especially for beginners or those looking to refine their wheel-throwing technique. We encourage you to come with realistic expectations and a curious\, beginner’s mindset.\n\nNew to Clay?\n\nIf you’ve never touched clay before\, we highly recommend trying one of our hand-building classes first. These offer a great introduction to the feel of clay and how to manipulate it. They’re also perfect for creating beautiful\, larger-scale projects with a high rate of success—even for first-timers!\n\nAbout the Learning Process:\n\nIt’s important to know: no one sits down at the wheel for the first time and magically creates a big\, beautiful bowl. Wheel throwing is a skill that develops over time\, and every class builds on the one before it. Celebrate your progress—it’s a true sign of success!\n\nGet Ready to Get Messy!\n\n Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. (Clay washes out easily!)\n An apron is optional but helpful.\n Tie back long hair and remove rings and bracelets.\n Short nails are best—but not required.\n\nWhat to Expect\n\n This class last 3 hours: 2.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of cleanup. As potters in a community studio\, we strive to leave our work space better than we found it.\n To ensure plenty of personal instruction\, this class is limited to 6 students—1 student per wheel.\n You’ll create 2–4 small pieces\, such as bowls\, coasters\, or spoon rests. As you grow your skills\, your pieces will grow in size\, too!\n After class\, Beth will trim\, dry and bisque fire your pieces. Next she will glaze and kiln fire them again. This process can take up to 4 weeks\, depending on drying time and humidity.\n We’ll notify you when your pottery is ready for pickup. Finished pieces must be picked up within 90 days of notification.\n\nAll-inclusive cost: $79\, which covers:\n\n All tool usage and materials\n Your choice of 1 glaze color\n Two kiln firings\n Expert instruction\n\nWant to Keep Throwing?\n\nWe hear it all the time: “I was just getting the hang of it!” “I don’t want to stop!”\n\nGood news—we’ve got options!\n\n Take another beginner session with Beth or any of our wheel instructors to keep building your skills.\n Join Beth’s Novice Class\, a multi-session course covering throwing\, trimming\, glazing\, and firing. (We recommend completing at least two beginner classes first.)\n Apply for a Pottery Membership at ARTworks Vass for ongoing studio access. Click here to learn more. (Pottery Memberships do not include instruction.)\n\nReady to get your hands muddy and create something beautiful?\n\nSpots are limited—reserve yours today!\n\nMore Important Information:\n\n Beginners are welcome.\n Dress to mess or bring an apron.\n Please note: ARTworks Vass is home to friendly gallery/studio cats who may be present during classes and events. 🐾\n Children age 14 and older may attend class independently.\n Registrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled\n Registration allows for 1 person per class. Only those who have registered may participate.\n Class starts promptly as scheduled.\n At ARTworks Vass\, you’re always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.\n You will be notified when your project is ready to pick up.  We will hold it for 90 days with monthly notifications by text or phone. If you haven’t requested an extension or picked up your work within 90 days\, your project will be disposed of at the gallery’s discretion.\n Click here to read the ARTworks Vass Disclosure and Liability Waiver for All Classes and Events\n\nRegister online here or call us at 910-245-4129 to save your space in class.\n\nClick here to request more information on scheduling a private class for a group of 6.

SUMMARY:Take your Oil Painting to the Next Level with Beth Roy
DESCRIPTION:Ignite your creativity with our talented artist/instructor who can paint and teach it all! From breathtaking landscapes to vibrant cityscapes and majestic animals\, she has mastered the art of capturing the beauty of any subject. \nIntermediate to experienced oil painters who want to take their skills to the next level can join seasoned artist\, Beth Roy on Monday\, Nov. 9th from 9:00 to 1:00 for an inspiring journey that will let your creativity flourish! \nBeth covers topics such as how to make your paintings more 3-dimensional\, color theory and the power of warm and cool colors\, elements of light and shadow\, loosening brushwork\, and finally\, painting how you see versus just copying a photograph. \nThis class is appropriate for oil painters with an intermediate to advanced level of experience for a cost of $79. \nGuests should plan to bring the following: \n\nAll painting supplies. See recommended supply list below.\nAt least three photographs as inspiration for your painting.\n\nYou’ll receive an email or phone call from Beth prior to class with a few more details\, and in the mean time you may email supply questions to info@ARTworksVass.com at least 48 hours prior to class. \nAbout Beth Roy \nGrowing up in rural Michigan\, artist Beth Roy acquired the foundation that allows her paintings to come to life today. She began riding horses at an early age and her life-long relationship with them has allowed her to translate them beautifully in her work. Body language is also a critical component of Beth’s compositions and using the subtlest of nuances\, she strives to capture the personality of animals and people in her work. \n  \nProfessionally\, Beth studied art at Austin Peay State College\, and Christopher Newport College. She has won several regional awards and her work is currently represented in Beaufort\, Southern Pines\, and Vass\, North Carolina. \nBeth explains her creative process in this way\, “I initially seek good composition. I zero in on the lights and darks\, while keeping in mind colorful shadows or mid-values. All of my paintings start with a fairly dry ground color\, not a white canvas\, and then blocks of color are added. Very thin paint is applied first and only at the end are details and thicker paints added.” Beth considers her work to be highly representational and generally realistic. \nOil Painting Supply List  \n  \nIf you have a personal preference of oil painting supplies\, please know that you may use what you have\, paints\, brushes\, medium\, canvas\, etc.  There are certain items I have found over the years that work best and cause the least amount of aggravation. \nPaints: Colors I recommend are: Gamblin cadmium yellow light\, Napthol red & ultramarine blue\, titanium white & ivory black. Additional colors that are convenient to have: Daler-Rowney burnt sienna\, M. Graham cadmium orange\, thalo green & permanent rose. \nMedium: to thin and mix paint. Walnut\, linseed oil\, Liquin or Gamblin Solvent-free gel. \nSolvent: for cleaning brushes Gamsol (odorless) or Turpenoid (odorless)  in a traveling container. \nBrushes: Any boar\, sable or squirrel bristles are fine. You should have at least three “flat” brushes size 2 thru 10.    A “round” brush of any size 2-6.  A small to medium size metal palette knife (plastic palette knives are not recommended).  Synthetic brushes are suitable to start a painting with\, but do not have consistency and long life. \nSupports: (painting surface) Stretched or board canvas: 8X10 up to 12X16. The composition sometimes determines the size\, plus personal preferences. \nPalette: A seasoned wooden palette\, metal invoice box or gray plexi-glass.   I do not recommend the disposable wax paper palette sheets. They cannot hold up to palette knives and cleaning.   As long as the palette is sturdy\, neutral color & non-absorbic. It can be your personal preference. \n  \nEasel: Table top easels are available for use or you may bring your own. \nMisc:  smock or apron to protect clothing\, nitrile gloves\, brush cleaner\, soap\, clean rags and if necessary shop towels. Many artists are getting away from using paper towels due to excess garbage and leaving lint on canvas. \nImportant Information: \n\nPlease note: ARTworks Vass is home to friendly gallery/studio cats who may be present during classes and events. 🐾\nRegistration allows for one Guest per class project.\nOnly Registered Guests may attend class.\nRegistrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled.\nClass starts promptly as scheduled.\nDress to mess or bring an apron.\nAt ARTworks Vass\, you’re always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.\nClick here to read the ARTworks Vass Disclosure and Liability Waiver for All Classes and Events\n\nRegister online here or call us at 910-245-4129 to save your space in class. \nClick here if you’d like to schedule this class as a private class for a minimum of 4 participants.

SUMMARY:Create an Abstract Collection of Art with Jodi Ohl at ARTworks Vass
DESCRIPTION:Learn to design and paint a small abstract art collection with Jodi Ohl on March 20th and 21st. \n\n\n\nOver the course of this workshop\, you will work on tried-and-true techniques to enhance your art practice. By building your skills around design\, color\, value\, and composition we will set the stage for a 4-piece (or more) collection that will be ready to hang in any home or gallery.  You will learn to express yourself through your brushstrokes and color choices and take your abstract art to the next level – whether you are a new artist or a seasoned professional! \n\n\n\nThis two-day workshop is fun and fast-paced with plenty of time for individual work\, as well as a variety of warm-up exercises that will help guide you towards your finished collection. \n\n\n\nYou can expect the following: \n\n\n\n\nExplore design principles that will help organize your composition\n\n\n\nDive into color mixing and how to select your own unique color palette\n\n\n\nLearn how and when to use a variety of mixed media\, gel\, and acrylic mediums\n\n\n\nCreate work that evokes a feeling or experience\n\n\n\nGuidance by Jodi in a gentle and nurturing way.\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for this fun-filled weekend of expressive abstract art making and take home an experience and a “collection” that will inspire you for years to come. \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in abstract painting but don’t know where to start or you have been painting in acrylics and want to learn some fresh techniques\, Abstract Collection with Jodi Ohl could just be the workshop for you. \n\n\n\nJodi Ohl is a contemporary artist\, author\, and instructor celebrated for her vibrant abstract and whimsical mixed-media creations. Based in Aberdeen\, NC\, Jodi works from her home studio and travels extensively to lead workshops and retreats around the world\, inspiring students to embrace creativity and explore the possibilities of abstract art. \n\n\n\nNecessary Supplies to Bring: \n\n\n\nBrushes: \n\n\n\n\nAssorted brushes in different sizes. Include both flat and round brushes and at least one 2-4 inch flat brush for larger surfaces.\n\n\n\nSome fun optional Mark Making supplies are: Neo Color II Crayons\, Stabilo Woodies\, Graphite\, China Marker are all great to have on hand.\n\n\n\nOther Markmaking tools: Jodi suggests these fine line applicators that can be filled with fluid acrylic paint (thinned with a little Golden High Flow Medium) in the color of your choice.\n\n\n\nCatalyst Wedge\, Jodi recommends the #6.\n\n\n\n\nPaint: \n\n\n\n\nAssorted acrylic paint. Jodi suggests Golden Fluid paint along with some soft body paint such as Liquitex or Nova. (Nova has good prices and fun bundles)  Please do not bring heavy body paint as your main paint to use.\n\n\n\nTo start with a ‘neutral base’ on your palette\, Jodi recommends the following’: Titanium White\, Titan Buff\, Carbon Black\, Van Dyke Brown or Raw Umber\, Azo Gold\, and Payne’s Gray.\n\n\n\nFeel free to bring your favorite colors. Others you may find useful are: Hansa Yellow\, Cadmium Yellow\, Napthol Red\, Pyrole Red\, Ultramarine Blue\, Prussian Blue\, Quinicridone Magenta\, Turquoise\, and Yellow Iron Oxide (or Indian Yellow Hue).\n\n\n\n\nMediums: \n\n\n\n\nSmall bottles of Glazing Medium (Satin) and Matte medium (fluid\, not gel).\n\n\n\n\nSurfaces: \n\n\n\n\n4-6 12″x12″ wood panels for your main project (canvas or wood panel) Amazon has a great bundle with light weight wood panels you can find HERE.\n\n\n\nOptional: A couple of smaller canvases to paint additional projects.\n\n\n\nPlease pre-gesso your surfaces to save time in class. Jodi suggests using a grey gesso (adding a little black paint to white gesso)\, and will have gesso available if you are unable to pre-gesso your surfaces.\n\n\n\n\nPalette: \n\n\n\n\nA Covered Palette is Preferred along with palette paper or freezer paper to mix your paints.   A Sta-Wet Palette is what Jodi uses.\n\n\n\n\nJournal and Preparation: \n\n\n\n\nAn art journal if you’d like to practice ideas or use to create backgrounds with excess paint. A small notebook for note taking and idea generating.\n\n\n\n It is really helpful to research abstract paintings via Pinterest or perhaps a book and save to an inspiration board (electronic—Canva or Pinterest). Think about what it is that draws you into the type of work that you’ve saved. Is it the colors\, feeling it evokes\, or marks that are made? What inspires you the most in your own work? What inspires you in the world around you? We will be exploring a variety of inspiration to formulate our own work.\n\n\n\n\nClass Schedule: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, March 20th 9:00 to 4:00 \n\n\n\nSunday\, March 21st 9:00-4:00 \n\n\n\nLunch Break is from 12:00-1:00. \n\n\n\n\nFiltered water\, coffee\, tea\, and sweet and savory snacks are provided.
