Auntie Pine’s Must-Know Guide for Women in Their Menopause Era in The Pines

🌲 Meet Auntie Pine

Well, hello there!

I’m Auntie Pine—your slightly sassy, coffee-loving, bird-watching friend who’s learning that midlife isn’t a crisis… it’s just a really interesting adventure.

Somewhere along the way, I traded Claire’s Boutique for Bath & Body Works, got way too excited about Wild Birds Unlimited, and discovered that comfortable shoes are worth every penny.

These days you’ll usually find me carrying a cup of coffee, a handheld fan (just in case), and enough reading glasses to supply a small library. I believe line dancing counts as exercise, mocktails deserve their own happy hour, and Carolina Cinema should receive an award for having the best air conditioning in The Pines.

If you’ve ever…

  • Walked into a room and forgotten why.
  • Turned the radio down so you could “see” where you were driving.
  • Bought another pair of reading glasses because the other six disappeared.
  • Wondered if a hot flash could actually melt your mascara.
  • Chosen a restaurant based on how comfortable the chairs are.

…then welcome.

You’ve found your people.

Here at Midlife in The Pines, we’ll laugh through the ups and downs of getting older, discover fun local places, share recommendations, and remind each other that this chapter of life can still be full of adventure.

Now, let’s kick things off with something every woman in midlife deserves…

Auntie Pine’s Unofficial Midlife Survival Guide to The Pines

Listen…

No one prepared us for this stage of life.

One day you’re perfectly fine.

The next you’re standing in front of the freezer because it suddenly feels like you’re vacationing on the surface of the sun while simultaneously Googling, “Can hot flashes actually melt mascara?”

If that sounds familiar, pull up a chair (preferably one with good back support), grab your favorite drink, and let’s survive midlife together… one laugh at a time.

1. Carolina Cinema Is Basically a Wellness Center

Forget the spa.Well maybe not forget but think simplier.

Carolina Cinema keeps it at a temperature that can only be described as North Pole Chic. They call them Flashback Movies, but let’s be honest… it’s code for, “Come have a hot flash in peace while watching movies from your youth.”

Bonus: nobody judges if you’re fanning yourself with the popcorn bucket.

Auntie Pine Tip: If you’re having a hot flash, check the movie schedule before you check the thermostat.

2. Never Enter the Traffic Circle Emotionally Unprepared

Five minutes of deep breathing.

Ten if it’s FRIDAY.

You’ve got one driver auditioning for NASCAR at The Rock and another driving like gas is 29 cents a gallon (wouldn’t that be nice?) and it’s 1957. Meanwhile, you’re turning your radio down so you can “see better” while trying to figure out what everyone else is doing.

Bless us all.

Auntie Pine Tip: Leave five minutes early. It’s cheaper than therapy. If you need a therapist we know some.. 🙂

3. Ordering Dinner Has Become an Olympic Sport

Why does nothing sound good… until someone else’s food arrives?

You order the salad.

Your husband gets the burger.

The lady at the next table has fajitas.

Now you want all three.

Restaurants really need a Midlife Sampler Platter because we’re indecisive, our taste buds are confused, and we’re probably taking half of it home anyway.

(Also… yes… I once told Mason’s Restaurant their grits were too sweet. Apparently it wasn’t the grits… it was me.)

Auntie Pine Tip: Order the appetizer you really wanted. Life’s too short.

4. The Receptionist at Your Doctor’s Office Knows You by Name

You’re practically family now.

Auntie Pine Tip: Learn the receptionist’s favorite snack. You may not get seen any sooner, but at least someone will be excited you’re there.

5. You Know Every Good Bathroom in The Pines

You’ve got a mental map.

You know which ones are spotless.

Which ones have good lighting.

Which ones have enough stalls.

And which ones are a hard no.

This is valuable community information.

Please share your favorites!

Auntie Pine Tip: Never pass up a clean restroom. Trust me on this one.

6. The Rec Room Is a Time Machine

Arcade games.

Pinball.

Skee-Ball.

And… wait for it…

The ORIGINAL Oregon Trail. Like the one with the black screen and green writing!!!!

Nothing says childhood nostalgia quite like everyone dying of dysentery.

Auntie Pine Tip: Challenge your kids or grandkids to a game. They need to know what real video games looked like!

7. Welcome to Your Elastic Waistband Era

Fashion is no longer about squeezing into jeans.

It’s about surviving a hot flash with dignity.

Flowy tops.

Stretchy pants.

Breathable fabrics.

And thank you to Marie & Marcele for reminding us we can still look cute while being comfortable.

Auntie Pine Tip: If the pants are cute and comfortable… buy them in two colors.

8. Hair Appointments Are Basically a Subscription Service

You either have your stylist on speed dial…

…or you’re standing in the Walgreens hair dye aisle pretending you’re “just browsing.”

No judgment here.

Drop your gray hair survival tips in the comments.

Auntie Pine Tip: Always schedule your next appointment before you leave. Future You will thank you.

9. Reading Glasses Have Reproduced

How do I own so many pairs…

…and still can’t find one?

One in the car.

One in the kitchen.

One by the bed.

One in the purse.

One on top of my head.

At least oversized Breakfast at Tiffany’s sunglasses still make me feel fabulous… and conveniently hide the wrinkles.

Auntie Pine Tip: Buy the multipack. They multiply anyway.

10. Line Dancing Is the New Running Man

Who knew we’d be learning choreography again?

Except now it’s country music…

Comfortable shoes…

And hoping our knees cooperate.

Auntie Pine Tip: Don’t worry if you miss a step. Just smile and keep moving like you meant to do it.

11. Mocktails Are My Happy Hour

These days I’m looking for something that’s:

✔ Alcohol-free

✔ Caffeine-free

✔ Sugar-free

✔ Actually tastes good

If it won’t keep me awake until 3:00 a.m. or make me break into another hot flash…

I’ll take two.

Auntie Pine Tip: If it tastes good, helps you sleep, and doesn’t make you sweat… it’s a keeper. CORK in Southern Pines has some fun and delicious choices!

12. My Shopping Priorities Have Completely Changed

Can we talk about this?

How did I go from…

✨ Claire’s Boutique…

🕯️ Bath & Body Works…

🐦 to Wild Birds Unlimited?

Teenage me would’ve been looking for glitter earrings.

Today’s me gets excited over a candle that smells like fresh laundry, bird seed that attracts cardinals, and a squirrel-proof feeder.

I don’t know exactly when it happened…

…but I regret absolutely nothing.

Auntie Pine Tip: Never apologize for getting excited about birds. They’re cheaper than therapy and they don’t judge.

Now It’s Your Turn…

What should I add to Auntie Pine’s Midlife Survival Guide to The Pines?

Where’s your favorite place to cool off?

Who serves the best mocktails?

Where do you buy your comfiest clothes?

What’s your favorite local boutique?

Which business deserves an Auntie Pine shout-out?

And perhaps most importantly…

Where are the cleanest public bathrooms in The Pines? 😂

Share your best tips in the comments because this guide is definitely going to need a second edition!

Life’s too short for uncomfortable shoes and bad coffee.

See you around The Pines!
