The Knollwood Maneuver with Gigi Walter

During World War II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, considered eliminating Airborne divisions following two unsuccessful missions. However, General George C. Marshall believed strongly in the value of Airborne forces as independent divisions and sought an opportunity to prove their effectiveness.
That defining opportunity came right here in Moore County. The Knollwood Maneuver conducted December 6–12, 1943, involved more than 10,000 troops and took place at the Knollwood Army Auxiliary Airfield—now known as the Moore County Airport. This large-scale exercise ultimately demonstrated the strategic value of Airborne operations and played a pivotal role in preserving Airborne divisions within the U.S. Army.
