5 Things You May Not Know About Veterans Day
1. It was originally called Armistice Day. First commemorated in 1919, the holiday became Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize veterans of all wars.
2. November 11 has a special meaning. The armistice that stopped World War I fighting between the Allies and Germany took effect at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918—the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
3. It honors service in wartime AND peacetime. Veterans Day recognizes all who served honorably in the U.S. military, with a special emphasis on thanking living veterans. Memorial Day honors those who died in military service.
4. Veterans Day was once celebrated in October! Federal observance moved to the fourth Monday in October beginning in 1971. It returned to November 11 in 1978 because of the date’s historical significance.
5. There’s no apostrophe in Veterans Day. The official name honors all veterans—it doesn’t indicate ownership of the day. That’s why “Veterans Day” is the correct spelling.
