Favorite Fall Traditions in The Pines – Some events have become such a part of fall around here that locals look forward to them year after year.

Labor Day weekend brings the Pinehurst Barbecue Festival, a flavorful kickoff to fall in The Pines! This annual celebration brings together great barbecue, talented pitmasters, live entertainment and plenty of Southern hospitality in the Village of Pinehurst.

Downtown Southern Pines welcomes the season with AutumnFest, a longtime fall favorite filled with arts and crafts, local vendors, entertainment, food and plenty of reasons to spend the day downtown. Always the 1st Saturday in October.

Step back in time at one of Aberdeen’s favorite community traditions. The Malcolm Blue Farm Festival brings history to life at the historic Malcolm Blue Farm with activities, demonstrations, entertainment and family fun. ALways the last Saturday in September.

Something fishy is always happening at Aberdeen’s annual Sardine Festival! This quirky local tradition brings the community together at Aberdeen Lake Park for a free lunch of sardines, crackers, Moon Pies, RC Colas and Cokes. A highlight of the festivities is the arrival of the Sardine Queens by fire truck, followed by the crowning of a new queen. Admission is free, and donations help support local organizations serving children throughout Moore County.
Always the 2nd Friday of October at lunch time.

The Village of Pinehurst comes alive during HollyFest, a day filled with family activities, entertainment, vendors, seasonal fun and the unmistakable charm of the Village.
Always the 3rd Saturday in October.

Keep your eyes open! The annual Pottery Pinecone Hunt turns exploring the area into a treasure hunt as handcrafted pottery pinecones are hidden for lucky finders to discover. Put on by Home of Golf this Hunt is a fall twist on the popular Pinecone Pathways hunt in spring and is a part of A Great Trails State Day Celebration.

Thanksgiving morning in Southern Pines brings one of the area’s most picturesque traditions: the Blessing of the Hounds. Horses, riders and hounds gather for this beloved Thanksgiving Day tradition that has become a memorable part of the holiday season in The Pines.
Those are only a few of the events that make autumn here so much fun.
Throughout the season, you’ll find pumpkin patches, fall markets, live music, outdoor concerts, Halloween celebrations, trunk-or-treats, Oktoberfest events, arts and crafts shows, community festivals, nature programs, local theater, family activities and Thanksgiving traditions happening across the area.
And sometimes the best fall day doesn’t require a festival at all.
Take a walk beneath the longleaf pines, explore the shops and restaurants of our downtowns, enjoy an afternoon on a patio, visit a local farm, catch some live music or simply see where the day takes you.
Fall is a spectacular time to enjoy The Pines.
